Gamma-Wopla, the European leading designer of reusable plastic packaging, and Domino's Pizza, the takeaway and delivery pizza specialist, have strengthened their partnership to eventually equip all the chain's point of sales worldwide!

The two companies have signed a partnership agreement for the design, creation and supply of a ‘green’ solution designed to revolutionise the world of Domino's... this much greener solution is intended to be used in every link of the supply chain: from production to the point of sale, via transport and logistics!

The project involved creating a made-to-measure plastic tray to enable Domino's Pizza to store and transport 3 times more pizza dough in the same size container. ‘For over 60 years, pizza dough had been delivered to shops in trays containing an average of 6 to 10 dough pieces, a logistical pattern that involved transporting almost 80% of the packaging unused. So we had to find a much greener solution,’ says Hugo Ruiz, Supply Chain Director for the whole of France.

The two companies succeeded and developed a revolutionary solution called ‘GOLF’, a tray with 18 holes to deliver the dough pieces to all the shops in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, totalling 1,000 points of sale and more than 150,000 trays. But the project went even further, and soon became a global success, with both companies working to export the GOLF solution to other European countries and other continents.

Thomas Fredon, Director of Innovations & Operations Europe: ‘In the list of “best practices”, it's clear that we've ticked all the boxes. With 3 times as much pasta in the same size container, we have considerably reduced our carbon impact in terms of transport. What's more, we've saved 50% on in-store storage space and improved productivity, with 3 times fewer return trips to retrieve the dough pieces from the cold rooms.’

The tray is currently being tested in other European countries, as well as in South America, and will shortly be rolled out in other regions of the world where the brand is active, such as North America and Asia. A real success, then, and a win-win partnership for these 2 partners.

Hugo and Thomas: ‘Innovation is at the heart of Domino's Pizza DNA. The idea was first conceived in France and the group has supported us in this project, which represents a real technological revolution for the brand. It also marks a long-term partnership between Domino's Pizza and Gamma-Wopla. Over the past 2 years, we've come to appreciate Gamma-Wopla’s commitment, availability, flexibility and speed of execution. As for their added value, they are both supplier and manufacturer, a major advantage for us in having a direct contact without the need for an intermediary.’

‘We are particularly pleased and proud to have been involved in such a large-scale project. It's clear that the challenge was huge and the ambitions high in terms of sustainable development. Our R&D team worked closely with the Domino's Pizza teams to create this tailor-made, eco-responsible ‘GREEN’ solution, capable of meeting their expectations and ESG commitments. The GOLF project is a success and will enable Domino's Pizza to make both economic and ecological gains on a global scale,’ concludes Didier Maréchal, Head of Retail at Gamma-Wopla & Smart-Flow.
